Our Next Event

Prizewinning Historian and Novelist Simon Sebag Montefiore will Discuss and Sign his Book, Written in History, Letters that Changed the World

Monday 05 November 2018
7:30 pm

Opening a window on astonishing characters, seminal events and unforgettable words, Montefiore shows why these letters are essential reading, how they enlighten our past, enrich the way we live now, and illuminate tomorrow.

Simon Sebag Montefiore selects letters that have changed the course of global events or expressed a timeless idea - whether passion, rage, humour - from ancient times to the 21st century: some are noble and inspiring, some despicable and unsettling, some are exquisite works of literature, others brutal, coarse and frankly outrageous; many are erotic, others, heart-breaking.  It is a surprising and eclectic selection, ranging from England to China, Iraq to South America, filled with extraordinary women and men, from ancient times to now – truly a choice of letters for our own times: from love letters to calls for liberation, declarations of war to reflections on life and death, the writers vary from high to low, form the obscure to the great.

Simon Sebag Montefiore is a prizewinning historian and novelist whose bestselling books have been published in over forty-eight languages and are being developed for the screen by producers such as Angelina Jolie, Lionsgate, Universal, Netflix, 21st Century Fox and FilmFour. He has sold several original ideas to be developed as drama series / movies. He has won prizes for both fiction and non-fiction.  Catherine the Great and Potemkin was shortlisted for the Samuel Johnson and is being developed as a feature by Angelina Jolie. Stalin: The Court of the Red Tsar won the British Book Awards History Book of the Year Prize and is being developed as a TV drama series. Young Stalin won the Costa Biography Award (UK) and the LA Times Book Prize for Biography (USA).

The Spirellla Ballroom is located in Letchworth (SG6 4ET). Tickets are £6, which are deductible from the cost of the hardback book (£14.99) if purchased on the evening. To book tickets, please ring the shop on 01462 684631 or call in to the shop.
