Debate on What George Orwell Would Write About Today

Critics often speculate what Orwell would write if he were alive today. It would be interesting to hear his views on current domestic and international arenas given that he was against the all-powerful state, and that frequent appearances in today’s news of the terms “Big Brother” and ‘Orwellian’. A panel of four distinguished speakers with a wide spectrum of opinion will discuss just this at the David’s Bookshop debate on “What George Orwell Would Write About Today.”

Here are the four speakers:

Gordon Bowker is among the most respected of biographers of his generation. He published George Orwell (Little, Brown, 2004), a biography penned especially to coincide with Orwell's centenary received rave reviews from major news dailies across the world.

Corinna Ferguson is a barrister and since August 2008 has been a legal officer at Liberty (formerly the National Council for Civil Liberties), the UK’s oldest civil liberties and human rights organisation which works to promote human rights and protect civil liberties through a combination of test case litigation, lobbying, campaigning and the provision of free advice. At Liberty Corinna conducts litigation on a wide variety of human rights issues including counter-terrorism, police powers, religious freedom, privacy and forced labour. She has conducted interventions on behalf of Liberty in cases concerning free speech, open justice, UK complicity in torture of terrorism suspects abroad, and the liability of the UK for the acts of British forces in Iraq.

Peter Hitchens is an award-winning British columnist and author, noted for his traditionalist conservative stance. He has published five books and writes for Britain's The Mail on Sunday newspaper.

Vitali Vitaliev was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He is the author of eleven books. He has lived and written all over the world, but has chosen to live in Letchworth.
