Book Launch: The Road to Wigan Pier Revisited, with author Stephen Armstrong

Monday 12 September 2011
7:30 pm

The Road To Wigan Pier is George Orwell’s 1937 account of the bleak working and living conditions in the depressed north of England. In describing the misery of the country as it crawled out of a grim recession, he helped fuel a move for change that resulted in the modern welfare state and health service. This year is the 75th anniversary of Orwell’s book and the post-war progress is receding.

The Road to Wigan Pier Revisited follows Orwell’s original path and spends time with the people hit by shocking poverty, discovering a missing community and a forgotten generation. It also discovers acts of heroism, imagination and optimism the offer hope and faith in a nation of lions lead by donkeys. Stephen Armstrong is a writer and journalist. He is the author of War plc, The Super-rich, The White Island. He writes for the Sunday Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, Esquire and other publication. He lives in London.

The George Orwell Festival: From 9th to 18th September, the inaugural George Orwell Festival will take place in and around Letchworth Garden City, and in the nearby village of Wallington, where from 1936, George Orwell lived, married, and wrote some of his most famous books. Orwell remains one of the world's most read, quoted, and admired authors. In its choice of subject matter, themes, and focus, his work provides much inspiration for our times. The George Orwell Festival will celebrate the man, his life and career, and his writings - exploring his ideas, and their relevance to people now. Visit www.georgeorwellfestival.org for their latest news.
