Author, Sue Woolmans talks about and signs her new book, The Assassination of the Archduke

Tuesday 10 June 2014
7:30

At its heart, this is the chronicle of a family who, in their triumphs and tragedies, not only shaped but also embodied much of the tumultuous twentieth century

On 28 June 1914, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, Franz Ferdinand, and his wife, Sophie were killed by an assassin’s bullet on a visit to Sarajevo – a shot ‘that rang round the world’ and which led, just four weeks later to the outbreak of the First World War. Three great empires dominated Europe that summer: Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary. Four years later all had vanished in the chaos of war. One event precipitated the conflict, and at its heart was a tragic love story. This vivid account of the lives and cruel deaths of Franz Ferdinand and his beloved Sophie is set against a backdrop of glittering privilege and an Imperial Court consumed with hatred. The authors expose the startling truth behind the Sarajevo assassinations, examining the extent of Serbian complicity and rumours of conspiracy and official negligence. Events in Sarajevo also doomed the couple’s children to lives of loss, exile, and the horrors of Nazi concentration camps, their plight echoing the horrors unleashed by their parents’ deaths.

Sue Woolmans is a royal historian and writer whose work has appeared in Royalty Digest and Atlantis Magazine. With Paul Kulikovsky, great-grandson of Tsar Nicholas II’s sister Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, she recently edited the Grand Duchess’s memoirs, Twenty-Five Chapters of My Life. She is a sound engineer and lives in London.

Tickets are £3, but are deductible from the cost of the paperback which will be published in early June (£9.99).
