Best Selling Novelist, Victoria Hislop talks about and signs The Sunrise, her eagerly awaited new novel from the multi-million copy bestselling author of The Island, The Return and The Thread

Wednesday 08 October 2014
7:30 pm

With her unique brand of storytelling, Victoria Hislop once more shines a light on a fascinating and often overlooked part of Mediterranean history, as she has done so vividly in her three previous novels.

In the summer of 1972, Famagusta in Cyprus is a city bathed in a golden glow of good fortune, a place where Greek and Turkish Cypriots live in harmony. An ambitious couple, Aphroditi and Savvas Papacosta, are about to open the most spectacular hotel on the island and among their staff are both Greek and Turkish Cypriots, who have come to Famagusta to escape the years of unrest and violence that have swept across Cyprus. Members of two neighbouring families, the Georgious and the Ozkans, find work in the hotel. But beneath the city’s façade of glamour and success, tension is building. When a Greek coup plunges the island into chaos, Cyprus faces a devastating conflict. Turkey invades to protect the Turkish Cypriot minority, and Famagusta is attacked. Forty thousand people seize their most precious possessions and flee from the advancing soldiers. In the deserted city, just two families remain - for different reasons it is impossible for them to leave. This is their story.

Victoria Hislop Inspired by a visit to Spinalonga, the abandoned Greek leprosy colony, Victoria Hislop wrote The Island in 2005. It became an international number-one smash hit, published in thirty languages with over 3 million copies sold worldwide, and turned into a 26 part Greek TV series. The powerful reaction to the book motivated Victoria to learn Greek, and become an ambassador for Lepra, and she was named Newcomer of the Year at the British Book Awards in 2007. Her affection for the Mediterranean led her next to Spain, writing about the painful secrets of its civil war in The Return, which hit the top of the bestseller charts in 2008. In her third novel, The Thread, she returned to Greece to tell the extraordinary and turbulent tale of Thessaloniki and its people across the 20th century. Published in 2011 to widespread acclaim, it confirmed Victoria’s reputation as an inspirational storyteller, and was followed by her much-admired collection of Greek-set short stories, The Last Dance and Other Stories. The Sunrise is her fourth novel. Victoria divides her time between England and Greece.

Tickets are £6, but the cost is deductible from the cost of the hardback book (£19.99). The Spirella Ballroom is located on Bridge Street in Letchworth (SG6 4ET).
