ohn Gohorry in Residence from 10.30 onwards Saturday 30 January 2016

David’s Bookshop Poet in Residence John Gohorry will be in the shop from 10.30 onwards on Saturday 30 January, reading from his various collections and talking informally about his work.

John’s latest publication, Impromptus for George Erdmann, was published just before Christmas by Lapwing. It’s made up of 18 poems supposed to be written by the 20 year old J S Bach for the benefit of an old schoolfriend, George Erdmann, during the course of a 250 mile journey he made on foot between October 1705 and February 1706 from Arnstadt, where he was organist, to Lübeck, on the Baltic coast, so that he could hear Dieterich Buxtehude play the organ.

Little is known for certain about the details of Bach’s trip, other than the fact that he stayed away far longer than he had been given permission to do, and that when he got back his organ playing had become radically challenging to the authorities. John’s sequence, which is grounded in the authentic social, personal, and musical details of the time, presents Bach on a journey of self discovery that had imaginative, musical, emotional, and in the widest sense, spiritual dimensions.

Also included is the libretto for a supposed Abendmusik by Buxtehude on the story of the Good Samaritan. The composer Anna Krause is setting this libretto to music as part of her Ph.D. in Music Composition at the University of Oxford.
