Emma Bridgewater, Queen of British Kitchenware Talks about and Signs her New Book, Pattern at the Spirella Ballroom

Wednesday 11 May 2016
7:30 pm

'No one understands pattern and design quite like Emma does.
This gem of a book celebrates not just her beautiful designs but also the vision that channelled her craft into a global business. She is a remarkable woman and a national treasure.' KIRSTIE ALLSOPP

Sweet peas or morning glory twining round a mug; a gaggle of hens or a greyhound chasing a rabbit around a plate edge; the Rise & Shine design exhorting you to wake up with your morning coffee or the Toast & Marmalade range tempting you to have another slice - everyone has their favourite Emma Bridgewater pattern. Emma's design inspirations come from everyday life, and PATTERN looks at her biggest influences. Ranging about through diverse memories - from the children's bookshelf filled with Maurice Sendak, Beatrix Potter and Ladybird books, to family holidays on the North Norfolk coast or in the Scottish Isles; from cosy Paisley eiderdowns to Mary Quant patent white boots and citrus mini-dresses, to rummaging through antique shops and market stalls for bright crocheted patchwork blankets and groovy 1960s coffee pots - Emma shares the inspirational process of design that has taken her patterns to homes across the land.

Since establishing her pottery business 30 years ago, Emma’s cheerfully distinctive kitchenware has found its way onto the dresser shelves and kitchen tables of homes all over Britain and beyond. Today, Emma Bridgewater Ltd is still owned and run by Emma and her husband Matthew, who continue to contribute designs. Known for quintessentially British patterns, Emma Bridgewater pottery is manufactured in Britain, with over 200 people now employed in her factory in Staffordshire.

Tickets are £25 and include a copy of the hardback book or £30 for a pair of tickets and one copy of the book. The Spirella Ballroom is located on Bridge Road, Letchworth (SG6 4ET).
