THE FIRST BOOK ON THE TABOO OF FGM IN THE UK: It is both devastating memoir and bold polemic.

Imagine for a moment that you are six years old. You are woken in the early hours and bathed in warm water before being led down to the bottom of your garden to a strange and unfamiliar tent. There you are pinned down and subjected to the cruelest cut, ordered by your own mother. Forced down on a bed, her legs held apart, Hibo Wardere was made to undergo female genital cutting, a process so brutal she nearly died. She later moves to London where she embarks on a journey to understand FGM and its roots, whilst raising her own family and dealing with the devastating consequences of the cutting in her own life. Eloquent and searingly honest, this is Hibo’s memoir which not only tells of her own remarkable story but also sheds light on a medieval practice carried out in the 21st century.  Today as an FGM mediator and anti-FGM campaigner, Hibo helps young girls who are at risk of the procedure and exposes FGM as a very British problem. There have been 3000 FGM injury-related cases in UK hospitals in the past few months and a recent government report estimates that in one London borough, 1 in 20 women have been cut. Young girls aren’t just being taken back to Northern Africa for the procedure, it’s happening here in the UK.

 Hibo Wardere now works in London as an FGM co-ordinator working for a new government-led prevention programme. She lives with her husband and five children in East London.
