A Laurel and Hardy Short and Best-Selling and Award Winning Author, John Connolly will Introduce and Sign his Novel, he at The Broadway Cinema

Wednesday 06 September 2017
7:30

he is Stan Laurel (of Laurel and Hardy).

But he did not really exist.

Stan Laurel was a fiction.

And this is his tale.

This book was born in l999, when John Connolly was visiting a friend in LA.  A derby hat was mentioned in the course of conversation - one given as a gift by an aging comic actor to the friend, who was then a young boy. The hat was lost, but that conversation planted a seed, and from this small, kind gift comes an extraordinary fictional reimagining of the life of one of the greatest screen comedians the world has ever known.   he was a man who knew both adoration and humiliation; who loved, and was loved in turn; who betrayed, and was betrayed; who never sought to cause pain to others, yet left a trail of affairs and broken marriages in his wake. And whose life was ultimately defined by one relationship of such tenderness and devotion that only death could sever it: his partnership with the man he knew as Babe. But the strange thing, of course, is that Stan Laurel didn’t really exist.  The name was a fiction, just like the image on the screen.  Somewhere between Arthur Jefferson, his birth name, and Stan Laurel, his screen name, lay the truth of him, which is why he is never named in the book: why he is he, if you like.

John Connolly lives in Dublin and went to Trinity to study English.   This is his first literary novel, although his considerable breadth of writing covers much ground with previous books – from the remarkable The Book of Lost Things, through the number one bestselling Charlie Parker mystery thriller series, the YA science fiction trilogy and the gloriously funny Samuel Johnson children’s books to the non-fiction voume, Books to Die For.

The Broadway Cinema is located in Letchworth (SG6 3DD). Tickets are £6, which are deductible from the cost of the hardback book (£16.99) if purchased on the evening. To book tickets, please ring the shop on 01462 684631 or call in to the shop.
