BBC's North America Editor, Jon Sopel will Discuss and Sign his Book, If Only They Didnít Speak English, Notes from Trumpís America

Sunday 08 October 2017
3:30

Through music, film, literature, TV and even through the food we eat and the clothes that we wear, we all have a highly-developed sense of what America is; through our own visits we feel we know the country, and through our shared, tangled history we claim a special relationship. But the America of 2017 feels about as foreign a country as you could imagine.

There are very few British journalists working today who understand the American political and cultural landscape as well as Jon Sopel. As the BBC’s North America Editor, Jon has had rare access and insight to those shaping the world’s most powerful nation. He’s travelled on Air Force One, interviewed President Obama at the White House and has been eye to eye with the President Donald J. Trump, including a notoriously combative press conference where the Commander- in-Chief hissed menacingly, ‘I know who YOU are...’ But Jon Sopel also understands the other United States of America; a contrary, confused country where people feel powerless and unheard. Against a perpetual backdrop of terrorist threats and mass shootings, he’s witnessed a grave fracturing of American society

Jon Sopel has been the BBC ’s North America Editor since 2014. As a BBC presenter of 16 years, Jon has worked variously as the corporation’s Paris Correspondent, Chief Political Correspondent, hosted both The Politics Show and Newsnight and is a regular on HARDtalk, as well as a number of Radio 4 programmes. As North America Editor, Jon has covered the 2016 election at first hand, reporting for the BBC across TV, radio, and online – accompanying President Obama on Air Force One and interviewing him at the White House.

The Spirella Ballroom is located in Letchworth (SG6 4ET). Tickets are £6, which are deductible from the cost of the hardback book (£16.99) if purchased on the evening. To book tickets, please ring the shop on 01462 684631 or call in to the shop.
