DJ and Journalist Dave Haslam will Discuss and Sign his Book, Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor, Music, Manchester and More

Friday 01 June 2018
7:30 pm

An insider’s account of life at the Hacienda, the rise of Madchester and the birth of the rave era.

In the late 1970s, teenage John Peel listener Dave Haslam had his face pressed against a window, looking out at a world of music, books, ideas. In 2018, four decades later, he finds himself in the middle of that world. In his memoir, Haslam builds a rich context to the story of those decades; a definitive portrait of Manchester as a music city; the impact of life-shaking events (from the nightmare of the Yorkshire Ripper to the shock of the Manchester Arena terror attack); and how music has soundtracked his life, his times, his generation. In Sonic Youth Slept on My Floor Dave Haslam documents his encounters with inspiring characters including Tony Wilson, Nile Rodgers, Terry Hall, Neneh Cherry, Tracey Thorn, John Lydon, John Peel, Ian Brown, Laurent Garnier and David Byrne. He interviews Johnny Marr and John Lydon; Morrissey comes for tea; he meets writers including Raymond Carver and Jonathan Franzen; he discusses masturbation with Viv Albertine, and ecstasy with Roisin Murphy; he has a gun pulled on him at the Hacienda, a drug dealer threatens to slit his throat; and Sonic Youth slept on the floor.

Dave Haslam made his DJing debut at the Hacienda in 1986. He played there almost five hundred times, including on the final night of the club in 1997. Laurent Garnier, Ian Brown, Tim Burgess, Justin Robertson, and the Chemical Brothers were regular visitors to Haslam’s ground-breaking DJing events at the Hacienda, and all have credited Haslam as an inspiration. His journalism has appeared in NME, the Guardian and many more.

Tickets are £6, which are deductible from the cost of the hardback book (£20) if purchased on the evening . To book tickets, please ring the shop on 01462 684631 or call in to the shop.
