The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes is another irresistible novel of unexpected friendships, second chances and dark secrets. Masha was once a spirited, independent woman with a rebellious streak. Then twelve years ago a tragic event changed her life forever. Unable to let go of her grief, she finds solace in the silent company of the souls of her local Victorian cemetery and at the town's lido, where she seeks refuge underwater – safe from the noise and the pain. Ruth Hogan: In her early thirties, Ruth had a car accident, which left her unable to work
full-time, and she started writing seriously. In 2012, Ruth was
diagnosed with cancer, which she describes as ‘bloody inconvenient but
precipitated an exciting hair journey from bald to a peroxide blonde Annie Lennox
crop.’ Unable to sleep due to the chemo, she spent the nights writing. In The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes she draws from her own experiences of suffering from cancer, as well as a love of Victorian cemeteries, and the recognition that the relationships you make give life meaning.
