Davidís Bookshop Hosts an Art of the Short Story Panel with Two Short Story Writers, Tom Rachman and Ho Lin In Conversation with Hodder Fiction Editor Francine Toon

Sunday 15 July 2018
5:15 pm

Some writers believe short stories are harder to write than novels. They may put this down to every word having to count in a short story, while the narrative is allowed to meander in a novel. A short story is like producing a photograph, while a novel is more like making a film. A photographer will be thinking about every tiny detail in the frame and how it conveys meaning. It can be a character portrait, or a moment captured in time. Either way, there’s an art to it.  Come hear how two writers accomplish it.

Tom Rachman was a foreign correspondent for the Associated Press stationed in Rome, then an editor at the International Herald Tribune in Paris. Published in 25 countries, Tom is the author of three novels, the Imperfectionists Rise and Fall of Great Powers and The Italian Teacher.  His collection of short stories, Basket of Deplorables are satirical linked stories on the reaction to Trump, the hypocrisies of liberalism and living in a post-truth America.

Ho Lin is an author, musician and filmmaker, and the co-editor of the literary journal Caveat Lector. He has degrees from Brown University and Johns Hopkins University, and he currently resides in San Francisco. China Girl, about modern Asia and the Asia of imagination, is his first collection of short stories.

Francine Toon is a commissioning editor at Sceptre and publishes literary fiction and non-fiction, including short story writers May-Lan Tan, Rowan Hisayo Buchanan, Jessica Andrews and J. M. Holmes. She has worked on a range of different authors during her time at Hodder & Stoughton in the editorial and marketing departments including Stephen King, John le Carré, and E.M. Forster. She is a published poet whose work has appeared in The Sunday Times and Best British Poetry Anthologies. You can find her on Twitter @FrancineElena.

Tickets cost will £6 and will include discounts on the authors’ books on the evening. Tickets are available by calling in or by ringing the shop on 01462684631.
