In Clare Balding’s family, walking just took too long – she galloped through the countryside and she galloped through life. As her dad always said, “Why would you walk without a dog or a pitchfork?”

However, from leaving her family home in Kingsclere, to radio presenting through the bomb scare at Aintree, to co-inventing the ‘Mobot’, walking has become the constant in her adult life. Her adventures on foot have helped her discover the mad, hardy glory of Britain and its people. Most importantly, walking has let her discover not just that land and the seasons, but her family, her friends, her beloved dog Archie, and ultimately, herself. Now, she is about the embark on a new adventure – her and her brother Andrew are determined to conquer the Wayfarer’s Walk, a seventy-one mile route. What could possibly go wrong?

Clare Balding’s first book, My Animals and Other Family, was a runaway number one bestseller and won Autobiography of the Year at the 2012 Specsavers National Book Awards. Clare has been a broadcaster on TV and radio for over twenty years, starting as a trainee in BBC Radio Sport. She has covered a range of events including five summer Olympics, four Paralympics, four Winter Olympics, three Commonwealth Games and twenty-one Grand Nationals. In 2012 she won a BAFTA special award for her work on the London Olympics and Paralympics. She also won Presenter of the Year at the Royal Television Society Awards, Sports Broadcaster of the Year from the Sports Journalists Association and awards from Red, Attitude, TRIC, Women in Film and TV and Glamour magazine. In 2013 she received an OBE for services to broadcasting and journalism.
